Kimi Antonelli heads into the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend with 292 points and an 81-point championship lead, giving Mercedes options unavailable to its rivals.
The Italian has won eight of the opening 14 grands prix, most recently the Spanish Grand Prix on September 13. George Russell is second with 211 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 191 and Lando Norris on 186.
Baku creates a clear tactical divide. Antonelli can defend his advantage, while every driver behind him must begin taking points away.
Mercedes can manage two different races
Mercedes tops the team standings with 503 points, 145 ahead of Ferrari and 197 clear of McLaren. That advantage eases the need for risky pit calls in the constructors’ race, but its drivers arrive at round 15 with sharply different priorities.
Antonelli has a simple assignment. Mercedes can respond to an undercut from his nearest championship rival, avoid stretching a stint solely for track position and focus on reaching the finish. Chasing an aggressive overcut offers less benefit with an 81-point lead already secured.
Russell must race Baku differently. With 211 points, he needs to beat Antonelli and close the gap. If the Mercedes drivers are running together, the pit wall may have to choose between covering an undercut against Antonelli and handing Russell the first stop. No team-order policy has been announced for Baku, so any intervention would depend on the race situation.
Mercedes has enough breathing room to focus on the drivers’ contest without putting its 145-point team lead at needless risk.
Ferrari has two threats to cover
Hamilton is third on 191 points, five ahead of Norris. Charles Leclerc holds fifth with 167, putting Ferrari in two separate fights as the championship arrives in Azerbaijan.
Ferrari sits 145 points behind Mercedes in the team standings and 52 ahead of McLaren. Those margins create conflicting strategic needs. Splitting Hamilton and Leclerc can cover an early undercut while keeping a longer first stint available, though one car may be exposed if the preferred pit window becomes clear.
Hamilton trails Antonelli by 101 points, while Leclerc is 125 behind. Matching the leader’s results will not be enough for either driver, giving Ferrari greater reason to chase track position at the first stop or extend a stint if clean air opens an overcut opportunity.
Ferrari has not confirmed an order favoring either driver. Hamilton is only five points ahead of Norris, and Leclerc trails the McLaren driver by 19, so giving up positions between the two cars would have a direct standings cost.
Norris needs reward from McLaren’s risk
Norris reaches Baku 106 points behind Antonelli after winning in Hungary and the Netherlands. Oscar Piastri is seventh with 120 points, 66 fewer than his teammate.
McLaren has 306 points and trails Ferrari by 52 in the teams’ championship. That gap gives it reason to keep both cars involved rather than automatically sacrifice Piastri’s race for Norris.
Norris’ position in the drivers’ standings requires greater urgency. Covering a rival’s stop can preserve position, but it will not do much to erase a 106-point deficit if Antonelli remains ahead. McLaren therefore has reason to consider an earlier undercut, a longer overcut or split strategies whenever its cars are close enough to provide options.
Team orders may come into play if Norris and Piastri meet late in the race, although no Baku instruction has been confirmed.
Verstappen must trade caution for opportunity
Max Verstappen holds sixth with 145 points, 147 behind Antonelli. Red Bull has confirmed Isack Hadjar will return after fracturing his wrist during the summer break, restoring the regular lineup for Azerbaijan.
Hadjar is eighth on 71 points. Red Bull can use its second car to cover an undercut, lengthen a stint or prompt a response from a rival. Verstappen’s championship calculation stays the same.
A safe finish behind Antonelli would increase the deficit. Red Bull needs to pursue chances to move Verstappen ahead while accounting for a car issue the team has acknowledged cannot be fully fixed until 2027.
Baku begins the next championship phase
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix takes place from September 24 through September 26. Bahrain in Malaysia follows from October 2 to 4, with Singapore next on October 9 to 11.
That schedule rewards control from Antonelli. For Russell, Hamilton, Norris, Leclerc and Verstappen, Baku’s first pit window will show how much risk each team will accept before the final eight rounds begin.
