Charles Leclerc turned a rapid start into victory for Ferrari at Silverstone after Kimi Antonelli hit trouble and a late Safety Car settled the order.
Leclerc strikes immediately at Silverstone
Charles Leclerc claimed a dramatic Ferrari victory in the 2026 British Grand Prix, beating George Russell and team-mate Lewis Hamilton after 52 laps at Silverstone. It was Leclerc’s first win of the season and the ninth of his Formula 1 career.
Leclerc built the win at the start. Kimi Antonelli had secured pole position for Mercedes, but the Ferrari driver launched past him and grabbed the lead. Hamilton also overtook Antonelli, giving Ferrari an early one-two and leaving the championship leader with ground to recover.
Antonelli fought back and eventually passed Hamilton for second. Leclerc stayed composed out front, surrendering the lead only when he pitted and Mercedes extended Antonelli’s stint.
Leclerc finished in 1:27:11.335 and earned 25 points. The official margin was 0.427 seconds, though the field had been compressed by a finish under Safety Car conditions rather than a flat-out run to the checkered flag.
Antonelli’s challenge collapses late
Antonelli continued until Lap 36 before stopping and starting his pursuit of Leclerc. By extending the opening stint and then closing on the Ferrari, the Mercedes driver had put himself in victory contention. His race unraveled on Lap 41.
Mercedes suggested a left-front wheel shield failure after a problem developed on Antonelli’s car. He ran off the circuit several times and needed two additional pit stops, tumbling down the order. A five-second penalty for exceeding track limits added to the damage.
Antonelli was classified 15th without scoring. A race that began from pole position and became a credible bid for victory ended with a costly result for the championship leader.
Leclerc still earned the result on merit. He took control before the first sequence of corners had settled, handled the middle phase and stayed ahead while the strategies shifted around him. Antonelli’s problem eliminated the main late threat, but Leclerc had already put himself in position through his launch and execution.
Verstappen crash decides the finish
The final twist arrived on Lap 48, when Max Verstappen spun into the gravel at Stowe. The Red Bull driver had occupied third place before crashing and was classified 20th after completing 46 laps. With too little time left to restart the race, the incident triggered the Safety Car that settled the result.
Russell remained on track as other drivers pitted under caution, moving him ahead of Hamilton. He finished second for Mercedes, 0.427 seconds behind Leclerc, and collected 18 points on an afternoon when his team’s leading contender dropped outside the scoring positions.
Hamilton rounded out Ferrari’s podium, 0.772 seconds behind his team-mate. A post-race investigation examined a yellow-flag infringement, but the stewards issued a reprimand and left his third place unchanged.
Ferrari therefore placed both cars on the podium at the home race for Russell and Hamilton. Leclerc delivered the victory, and Hamilton’s third place lifted the team’s Silverstone haul to 40 points.
Points spread through the midfield
Lando Norris took fourth for McLaren, finishing 1.149 seconds behind Leclerc in the Safety Car-compressed classification. Isack Hadjar placed fifth for Red Bull Racing, followed by a particularly strong double-points finish for Racing Bulls.

Bortoleto scored four points for Audi with eighth, while Colapinto and Gasly put both Alpine cars into the points. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri just missed the top 10 in 11th.
Three drivers retired. Verstappen joined Alexander Albon, who stopped after 43 laps, and Nico Hulkenberg, whose race ended after 36. Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll all finished one lap down, with Sainz also handed a one-lap penalty for overtaking the Safety Car.
Championship pressure grows after British GP
Antonelli keeps the championship lead, though his advantage fell to 25 points after he failed to score. Russell’s runner-up finish brought him within the value of one race victory, while Hamilton trails Antonelli by 32 points after reaching the podium.
Ferrari also closed significantly in the constructors’ contest. Leclerc’s victory and Hamilton’s third place enabled the team to gain 22 points on Mercedes at Silverstone, even with Russell reducing the loss by finishing second.
The British Grand Prix swung on Leclerc’s opening pass, Antonelli’s mechanical trouble and Verstappen’s late crash. Ferrari took full advantage, with Leclerc’s immediate attack and controlled run keeping him at the front from the opening lap until the Safety Car secured his victory.
