The numbers define Hendrick’s case
Rick Hendrick founded the organization in 1984, and it now holds the NASCAR Cup Series records for championships and race victories. Its 14 drivers’ titles passed Petty Enterprises’ long-standing total of 10, while its Cup victory count topped 300 in 2023.
Peak achievement and sustained success place Hendrick first in an all-time team ranking.
Petty set the original standard
Petty Enterprises offers the strongest historical comparison. Lee Petty won three championships, while Richard Petty claimed seven, giving the family operation 10 titles across two generations.
Richard Petty supplied much of the team’s victory total in a radically different NASCAR era. His record 200 Cup wins included 27 in 1967 alone, when the schedule featured 48 points races. Modern schedules provide far fewer chances, so raw win totals do not offer a perfect comparison between generations.
Hendrick spread success across eras
Hendrick’s 14 championships came through a wide range of drivers and competitive formats. Terry Labonte won the 1996 title, Jeff Gordon collected four between 1995 and 2001, and Jimmie Johnson added seven from 2006 through 2016.
Chase Elliott followed in 2020, then Kyle Larson won in 2021.
Johnson’s five consecutive championships from 2006 through 2010 are unprecedented in Cup history. That run came under the Chase format, while Gordon earned his first three crowns through season-long points systems. Hendrick won under both.
How the other giants compare
Joe Gibbs Racing has five Cup championships, including two with Tony Stewart and one apiece with Bobby Labonte, Kyle Busch and Ty Gibbs. Gibbs’ latest Iowa victory adds to the record of an organization whose title-winning span started with Labonte in 2000.
Team Penske has multiple Cup championships and combined its NASCAR success with major achievements across American motorsport. Richard Childress Racing won six of its Cup titles with Dale Earnhardt, connecting Earnhardt to one organization in the same way Gordon and Johnson later became linked with Hendrick.
Wood Brothers Racing represents a different measure of greatness. Founded in 1950, the team helped reshape pit stops with its organized crew methods and has won the Daytona 500 five times, despite never claiming a Cup championship.

Hendrick’s record does not guarantee a recovery. With the 2026 Chase approaching, Petty’s warning shifts attention from reputation to execution.
