Rosenqvist owns the IndyCar feat legends rarely achieved

2September 17, 2026

Felix Rosenqvist finished ninth in the 2026 IndyCar standings, but his record-setting Indianapolis 500 victory gave the season lasting historical weight.

Felix Rosenqvist finished ninth in the 2026 IndyCar championship, but victory in the 110th Indianapolis 500 on May 24 put his season in a category the standings cannot capture.

Rosenqvist defeated David Malukas in the closest finish in Indianapolis 500 history. That result is the strongest case for including his year in any new ranking of IndyCar’s greatest individual seasons that did not produce a championship.

A modest ranking masks a giant result

Rosenqvist scored 412 points in 18 starts, finishing 219 behind five-time champion Alex Palou. His record included one victory, two poles, five top-five finishes and seven top-10 results. He led 168 laps.

Those numbers don't suggest a title challenge.

Traditional season rankings have trouble accounting for Indianapolis. A championship measures results at every circuit, but the Indy 500 can shape a career in a single afternoon. Ninth place fairly represents Rosenqvist’s complete schedule. It does not convey the historical significance of winning the series’ signature race in its closest finish.

Malukas offers the clearest contrast

Malukas finished fifth in 2026 with 514 points, putting him 102 ahead of Rosenqvist. He collected nine top-five finishes and 13 top-10s, while his 282 laps led ranked second among the championship’s top 10 behind Palou’s 673.

He also finished the season without a win.

Their May 24 duel offers a direct comparison. Malukas put together the better championship campaign and ended the year as Team Penske’s highest-placed driver. Rosenqvist secured the result likely to receive greater historical recognition.

Greatness requires separate categories here. Malukas has the stronger consistency case. Rosenqvist owns the legacy case because their Indianapolis finish set a race record.

The 2026 winners table supplies context

Palou claimed six victories and the championship with 631 points. Pato O’Ward won three races, including both Milwaukee Mile events on Aug. 30. Kyle Kirkwood and Christian Lundgaard took two victories apiece, and Josef Newgarden also won twice.

Rosenqvist’s lone victory left him tied on wins with Marcus Ericsson and Scott McLaughlin. At Laguna Seca on Sept. 6, McLaughlin led 87 of 95 laps in the season finale and snapped a 36-race winless span.

No other winner in 2026 captured the Indianapolis 500.

That separates volume from magnitude. Palou’s six victories set the championship standard. O’Ward delivered the schedule’s only Milwaukee sweep. Rosenqvist’s single win carried the season’s strongest standalone historical distinction because it came at Indianapolis and delivered the closest finish in the race’s history.

Where Rosenqvist’s season fits

A credible all-time ranking shouldn't put Rosenqvist’s 2026 campaign ahead of dominant championship seasons. Palou recorded 12 top-five finishes, 15 top-10s and eight poles this season, then beat runner-up Kirkwood by 86 points. That is sustained control.

Rosenqvist’s season fits in a different tier, alongside campaigns remembered mainly for one monumental victory instead of championship command. His ninth-place finish lowers the full-season grade, but it does not reduce the scale of his Indianapolis achievement.

That distinction also explains why driver greatness and season greatness can yield different answers. A complete career rewards repeated success. One record-setting result can give a single season a permanent place in history.

The next celebration is already scheduled

Rosenqvist’s 2026 record will remain one win and 412 points, while the public recognition carries on. His hometown of Värnamo, Sweden, will celebrate the Indianapolis 500 winner on Dec. 5.
