The 2027 F1 calendar avoids Le Mans after Lando Norris completed his first full McLaren Hypercar test, although no race deal has been confirmed.
The 2027 Formula 1 calendar leaves the 24 Hours of Le Mans weekend open, removing a direct scheduling conflict for F1 drivers interested in the FIA World Endurance Championship’s biggest race.
The calendar was announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, one day after reports emerged that Lando Norris had completed his first full test in McLaren’s MCL-HY. Those are two confirmed developments, but McLaren has not announced Norris as part of its 2027 WEC race lineup.
The difference is important. Norris has driven the car, and the F1 calendar leaves Le Mans clear. His participation in the race is still unconfirmed.
Norris completes extensive Portimão running
Norris drove the MCL-HY at a private event in Portimão, Portugal, completing what was described as an extensive test program. It marked his first full test in McLaren’s Le Mans Hypercar and another step in the manufacturer’s preparations for its 2027 WEC entry.
No lap times, mileage totals or detailed technical findings were released from the test. McLaren also hasn’t said whether the run was part of a driver evaluation or focused solely on vehicle development.
McLaren’s WEC race seats remain open.
Norris is a confirmed test participant, not a confirmed WEC driver. Any claim that he will race at Le Mans in 2027 is speculation, despite the removal of the date conflict.
Calendar removes one firm barrier
F1 formally announced its 2027 schedule on September 16, with no clash against the 24 Hours of Le Mans. On paper, that leaves current grand prix drivers with a free race weekend, subject to contracts, team approval and preparation requirements.
The available date also opens the possibility of other F1 drivers considering Le Mans opportunities. Max Verstappen is among the names being discussed around the event, although neither Norris nor Verstappen has a confirmed 2027 Le Mans deal.
Norris does have a direct manufacturer connection. He races for McLaren in Formula 1 and has now driven the company’s MCL-HY during its development phase. McLaren has confirmed its Hypercar program for the 2027 WEC season, giving his Portimão running significance beyond a one-off demonstration.
A 24-hour race would demand further preparation. Clearing the date addresses the calendar issue, but contractual and sporting decisions would still need to follow.
McLaren’s 2027 program gathers pace
The Portimão test increases McLaren’s development mileage ahead of its WEC debut. The MCL-HY is being prepared to compete in the championship’s top Hypercar category, with Le Mans central to the program.
The project is also moving into a busy period for the driver market. McLaren must build crews for full-season endurance racing while pressing ahead with testing and homologation work on the car. Norris now has firsthand experience of the machinery, but McLaren has announced neither a full-season role nor a Le Mans-only seat for him.
The confirmed facts are clear. McLaren will enter WEC in 2027. Norris has completed his first full MCL-HY test, and Formula 1 will not race on the Le Mans weekend. No further arrangement has been confirmed.
Fuji comes first for the current grid
McLaren is developing its program for 2027, while the current WEC field prepares for the 6 Hours of Fuji from September 25 to 27, 2026. First practice begins at 10:15 on Friday, followed by the second session at 14:30.
Third practice opens Saturday’s running at 09:50. LMGT3 qualifying begins at 14:20, followed by LMGT3 Hyperpole at 14:40. Hypercar qualifying starts at 15:00, with the class’s Hyperpole session scheduled for 15:20.
The race begins at 11:00 on Sunday, September 27.
Ferrari heads to Fuji after Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen won at COTA to score 25 points. Earl Bamber, Sébastien Bourdais and Jack Aitken finished second for 18 points. António Félix da Costa, Charles Milesi and Ferdinand Habsburg claimed third and 15 points.
A late hydraulic failure for Toyota decided the Austin race. The No. 8 Toyota, meanwhile, recovered from 14th after a virtual-safety-car pit stop, with Sébastien Buemi gaining eight positions in the final hour to finish sixth.
Next decisions belong to McLaren
McLaren’s immediate work continues outside the current title fight. Its confirmed 2027 entry now includes test mileage from an F1 driver, while the Le Mans weekend is free of a grand prix clash.
Further MCL-HY development and confirmation of McLaren’s WEC crews are the next concrete steps, while the 2026 championship resumes with Fuji free practice at 10:15 on September 25.
