The unmistakable silhouette of the Peugeot 9X8 returns to Le Mans with a revised package and renewed hope.
Peugeot’s unconventional 9X8 Hypercar is back on the Circuit de la Sarthe, and this time the French manufacturer believes it has the package to challenge for the podium.
The biggest change is the addition of a rear wing, a philosophical U-turn for a car that once relied entirely on underbody downforce. Engineers say the new configuration has improved high-speed stability without sacrificing the low-drag concept that makes the 9X8 so quick on the long Mulsanne straights.
Drivers Loic Duval and Mikkel Jensen have reported a more predictable balance through the Porsche Curves, a section that exposed the car’s limitations last year. Qualifying pace remains the question mark, but long-run simulations suggest Peugeot could be a factor late in the race.
For a manufacturer with such rich Le Mans history, the pressure is immense. A strong showing this year would justify years of stubborn innovation — and perhaps rewrite the aerodynamic playbook for the Hypercar class.
