Jorge Martin will decide after the Austrian Grand Prix whether to undergo arm-pump surgery, adding a pressing medical call to a MotoGP title fight transformed by Marc Marquez. Across seven rounds, Marquez erased a 102-point deficit and now leads the championship on a tiebreak, level on points with Martin.
The timing offers little relief. Austria hosts round 15 from September 18 to 20, five days after MotoGP confirmed the biggest points-deficit comeback in series history.
Martin’s decision will follow Austria
Martin’s arm-pump problem became public after his pace faded during the San Marino Grand Prix on Sunday, September 13. His next move is set. He will race at the Austrian Grand Prix, then decide whether surgery is necessary.
No operation has been confirmed. As of September 15, Martin’s position is that he will make the decision after KTM’s home round, rather than before the race.
That puts the call between Austria and the next event on the calendar, the Japanese Grand Prix from October 2 to 4. Indonesia follows from October 9 to 11.
The schedule leaves a gap after Austria, but Martin and Aprilia have not announced a procedure or recovery timetable.
Marquez completes record recovery
Marquez reached Misano behind Martin, then won both points-paying races. He beat Marco Bezzecchi in the Sprint on Saturday, September 12, with 22 points separating the championship’s top three contenders.
The Ducati Lenovo rider backed that up with his 78th MotoGP victory on Sunday. Bezzecchi had started from a record-breaking pole after becoming the first rider to lap Misano in under 90 seconds, but he crashed from the lead on lap one.
Marquez’s Grand Prix win pulled him level with Martin and put him atop the championship standings.
Seven rounds earlier, he trailed by 102 points.
That comeback frames Martin’s medical decision. The rider who led the championship into Misano now has the same points total as Marquez, while Bezzecchi stays in the three-way fight despite retiring from his home race.
Austria is the immediate test
The Austrian Grand Prix takes place from September 18 to 20 as round 15 of the 22-round season. It will be the first event with Marquez officially leading the 2026 standings, and Martin’s final race before deciding how to treat the arm-pump issue.
Marquez heads to Austria after sweeping the Misano Sprint and Grand Prix. Martin remains level on points with the Ducati rider, despite surrendering the championship lead on the tiebreak.
Bezzecchi needs to rebound from a costly Sunday. His Misano pace was clear throughout the weekend, including his sub-90-second pole lap on September 12, but an opening-lap crash denied him a Grand Prix result.
Before Misano, MotoGP described the title battle as a three-rider contest with nine Grands Prix left. Austria comes next, with a new championship order and all three contenders still in the fight.
Espargaro remains on Viñales’ bike
Pol Espargaro will again replace the injured Maverick Viñales at the Austrian Grand Prix. Confirmation on September 15 keeps Espargaro on the Tech3 entry for KTM’s home race.
Viñales has not been cleared to return, leaving Espargaro in the substitute role. The switch is confirmed for Austria only, and no additional replacement schedule has been announced.
KTM enters its home round with an adjusted rider lineup, while the championship leaders arrive with different concerns. Marquez brings a record comeback and back-to-back Misano wins. Martin has an arm condition requiring a decision immediately after the weekend.
Regulations receive September update
Updated 2026 MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 World Championship Regulations were published on September 15. The document is dated September 13 and applies to the current season.
The update comes during the quick turnaround from Misano to Austria, although the published information included no specific sporting change connected to Martin’s condition, Espargaro’s substitution or the championship tiebreak.
Track action in Austria begins during the September 18 to 20 weekend. After Sunday’s Grand Prix, Martin is due to decide whether his title campaign will include arm-pump surgery before MotoGP heads to Japan on October 2.
