Christopher Bell’s first Southern 500 victory moved him to second in the standings, 12 points behind Denny Hamlin with nine races left.
Christopher Bell left Darlington Raceway on Sept. 7 with his first Cup Series win at the track and a clear path into the championship fight. A late pass on Kyle Larson delivered the Southern 500 victory and moved Bell from sixth to second in the standings.
Denny Hamlin still leads. His advantage over his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate is down to 12 points, with nine races remaining in the 2026 title contest.
Bell makes the biggest jump
Bell collected 38 points in the opening race of the Chase, the biggest gain among the leading contenders. That result reshaped the top of the standings, with two Joe Gibbs Racing drivers now occupying the first two spots.
Ryan Blaney ranks third, 16 points behind Hamlin. Tyler Reddick added 11 points at Darlington and holds fourth at minus 24, while Chase Briscoe remains fifth at minus 37.
Only 37 points separate first from fifth.
Gibbs and Larson stay within range
Ty Gibbs puts a third Joe Gibbs Racing driver inside the top six. He sits 39 points behind Hamlin after Darlington, while Larson is seventh, another 10 points back.
Larson gained six points despite surrendering the Southern 500 lead to Bell late. He takes a 49-point deficit into the second race of the Chase.
Joey Logano and Chase Elliott are level on points, both 72 behind Hamlin in eighth and ninth. Bubba Wallace rounds out the top 10 at minus 81.
The lower half faces bigger deficits
Chris Buescher holds 11th, 88 points behind the leader, with Carson Hocevar one point farther back. William Byron is 16th, facing a 114-point gap to Hamlin.
Deeper in the standings, Zane Smith trails by 165 points and Todd Gilliland is 195 back. Austin Dillon faces a 203-point deficit, five fewer than Daniel Suárez.
Ty Dillon is at minus 213, Noah Gragson at minus 284 and Cody Ware at minus 410.
Keselowski issues Hocevar warning
Darlington also brought tension between Brad Keselowski and Hocevar after Hocevar spun the 2012 Cup champion. Keselowski responded with a short warning.
“Watch out”
The contact created another post-race problem for Hocevar, who departs Darlington 12th in the standings and 89 points behind the leader.
Gateway comes next
The Cup Series title battle heads to World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway on Sunday, with the race set for 3 p. m. Bell enters the weekend 12 points behind Hamlin, while Blaney is four points behind Bell and Reddick sits another eight points back.
