George Russell converted pole into a tense Mercedes victory at Spielberg, resisting Max Verstappen as Kimi Antonelli completed the podium.
Russell controls the start from pole
George Russell won the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix for Mercedes, holding off late pressure from Max Verstappen over 71 laps at the Red Bull Ring. Russell finished in 1:26:37.979, 1.611 seconds ahead of the Red Bull driver, and collected 25 championship points.
It was Russell’s second win of the season after his Australian Grand Prix success, and the seventh of his Formula 1 career. The result moved him back to second in the drivers’ standings and cut Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead.
Russell made a clean launch from pole position, stayed in front when the lights went out and built a solid advantage during the opening phase. That start mattered as Verstappen recovered from his qualifying crash and developed into a growing threat.
Antonelli had a more unsettled opening and ran wide several times, but he stayed in contention. His recovery kept both Mercedes cars in the podium battle and secured a major points haul for the team.
Verstappen charges into contention
Verstappen recovered strongly from his qualifying setback to finish second. The four-time world champion advanced during the early laps and fought Lewis Hamilton on multiple occasions as he moved toward the front.
The race changed once Verstappen took second. Russell had controlled much of the contest with a useful margin, but the Red Bull driver’s progress set up a direct battle for the win. Following his final pit stop, Verstappen cut into Russell’s advantage and reduced the gap enough to maintain pressure throughout the closing stages.
Russell held firm. He controlled the final phase well enough to keep Verstappen outside immediate striking distance, converting pole into victory by less than two seconds. The narrow margin reflected the pressure at the finish, with Russell still ahead at the chequered flag.
Mercedes secured the victory, while Red Bull showed significant race-day pace at its home venue. Verstappen’s recovery to second after entering the weekend’s decisive race from a compromised position following his qualifying crash denied Mercedes a one-two and earned him 18 points.
Antonelli completes close podium fight
Antonelli crossed the line 0.375 seconds behind Verstappen and 1.986 seconds after Russell. The championship leader remained close enough to fight for second late in the race while Verstappen concentrated on closing down the leading Mercedes.
The top three were separated by less than two seconds at the finish, with Russell leading Verstappen and Antonelli. Third place brought Antonelli 15 points and preserved a substantial championship advantage, although Russell reduced the gap.
Mercedes also showed its strength in Spielberg. Russell and Antonelli took 40 of the 43 points available from the grand prix result, increasing the team’s constructors’ championship lead. Mercedes departed Austria with 302 points, 98 more than second-placed Ferrari.
Russell gained particular value from winning while Antonelli finished third. Antonelli kept a clear championship lead, but Russell returned to second and revived his title push after an underwhelming run following the Melbourne opener.
Piastri leads the distant chasing group
Oscar Piastri placed fourth for McLaren, 21.809 seconds behind Russell, a gap that showed how far the leading trio had pulled clear. Lewis Hamilton finished fifth for Ferrari, 26.393 seconds behind the winner, after his earlier fights with Verstappen.
Isack Hadjar claimed sixth for Red Bull Racing, with Lando Norris next in the second McLaren. Charles Leclerc placed eighth for Ferrari on a disappointing afternoon for the team. Racing Bulls took the remaining points through Liam Lawson in ninth and Arvid Lindblad in 10th.
Gabriel Bortoleto headed Nico Hulkenberg as the two Audi drivers finished just outside the points. Pierre Gasly, Oliver Bearman and Franco Colapinto came next, followed by the final classified runners, Esteban Ocon, Alexander Albon and Fernando Alonso.
Four drivers retired. Lance Stroll stopped after 45 laps, while Carlos Sainz completed 23. Cadillac recorded a double retirement in the opening stages, as Sergio Perez lasted four laps and Valtteri Bottas two.
Victory tightens Russell’s title pursuit
Russell’s victory took him to 131 points, 40 behind Antonelli, who moved to 171 with third place. Hamilton fell to third in the drivers’ standings after finishing fifth.
Mercedes strengthened its position in both championships in Austria. Antonelli maintained a healthy drivers’ lead, Russell reclaimed his place as the nearest challenger, and two podium finishes extended the team’s constructors’ advantage.
The championship heads next to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone from July 2-5. Russell will reach his home event with momentum from a controlled start, a composed defence and a victory earned under sustained late pressure.
