Alex Palou led 79 of 90 laps at Barber, beating Christian Lundgaard by 13.2775 seconds and cutting Kyle Kirkwood’s championship lead to two points.
Palou controls Barber from pole
Alex Palou converted pole position into victory for Chip Ganassi Racing with a dominant drive in the 2026 Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park.
The four-time and defending IndyCar champion led 79 of 90 laps around the 17-turn, 2.3-mile road course. In a caution-free race, he gave up first place only during pit-stop cycles, effectively making it a flag-to-flag victory.
Palou finished 13.2775 seconds ahead of Christian Lundgaard to claim his second win through the season's opening four rounds. The Spaniard earned his 21st career IndyCar victory and became the first driver to win multiple races in 2026.
“Incredible day,” Palou said. “I told you qualifying was one of the best car balances I’ve ever driven. Today in the race, it was pretty good in the beginning, really good at the end, but we suffered a little bit on the used blacks that we had to use.”
The stint on used Firestone primary tires created some difficulty, yet the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda stayed in command. No caution periods closed up the field, allowing Palou and his team to turn their pace into a decisive advantage.
Lundgaard’s challenge fades in the pits
Lundgaard emerged as Palou's strongest challenger and led 10 laps in the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. He also set the fastest lap of the race, showing the genuine speed behind his second-place finish.
His best chance arrived around the final pit exchange. A slow stop cost him approximately 10 seconds when the right-rear tire took too long to attach, ending his opportunity to pressure Palou in the closing stages.
Lundgaard still secured his second consecutive runner-up finish at Barber.
The result extended his record at the circuit to four straight top-six finishes and delivered his second podium of the season. The pit-stop delay accounted for much of the final 13-second margin, although Palou had already taken control before that decisive exchange and was never passed for the lead on track.
Rahal returns to the podium
Graham Rahal took third for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, crossing the line 1.0102 seconds behind Lundgaard in the No. 15 Honda. It was Rahal's first podium since August 2023 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
“I felt like this was coming,” Rahal said. “We’re pretty pleased with this. Feels good.”
David Malukas placed fourth for Team Penske, only 0.7080 seconds behind Rahal. He has now finished sixth or better three times in his first four appearances of the season, continuing his consistent start with the team.
Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood completed the top five and retained the championship lead. Five different teams filled the first five positions, even as Palou stood comfortably clear of the field.
Marcus Armstrong finished sixth, with Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon next. Santino Ferrucci, Marcus Ericsson and Josef Newgarden filled the remaining top-10 positions. All 25 starters reached the checkered flag, and only four finished off the lead lap.
Barber dominance reaches new heights
Palou's third Barber victory added to his outstanding record at the Alabama circuit. His previous wins came in 2021 and 2025, and that first Barber success was also the first IndyCar victory of his career.
Palou has led 160 of 180 laps across the 2025 and 2026 races, just under 90 percent of the total. He started both from pole, winning last year's race by 16.0035 seconds before recording another double-digit margin this season.
In six Barber starts for Chip Ganassi Racing, Palou has led 232 of 540 laps. His average starting position during that run is 3.3, and his average finish is 2.5. He has failed to lead a lap only once across those six visits.
His results on permanent road courses are similarly emphatic. Palou has won six of the past eight IndyCar races at those venues, with finishes of second and third in the other two. Five road-course events remain on the 2026 schedule.
Championship fight tightens dramatically
Palou stayed second in the standings but cut a 26-point deficit to Kirkwood down to two. After four of 18 rounds, Kirkwood has 156 points and Palou has 154.
Lundgaard rose four places to third on 121 points, 35 behind Kirkwood. Malukas sits fourth with 116, while Newgarden holds fifth on 113.
Rahal's podium moved him four spots from 16th to 12th, where he has 82 points. The finish produced a major standings gain and showed Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing could capitalize in a clean, uninterrupted race.
Palou went on to win the series championship in both previous seasons in which he triumphed at Barber. The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach follows on April 19, when Kirkwood will try to defend a championship lead that has shrunk to two points.
