A historic championship pace
Palou has scored 457 points in 12 starts. Second-place David Malukas has 374, with Kyle Kirkwood on 370. Six races remain, and Palou leads the field in victories, poles and laps led.

His wins have come across multiple disciplines. Palou prevailed on the streets of St. Petersburg, Long Beach and Detroit, at Barber Motorsports Park, and on the Nashville Superspeedway oval. That street-course, road-course and oval success carries weight in a championship that demands versatility.
The milestone now within reach
A fifth championship would put Palou in rare company. A. J. Foyt owns the recognized major American open-wheel record with seven titles, while Scott Dixon has six. Palou’s four leave him level with Mario Andretti, Sébastien Bourdais and Dario Franchitti.
Winning in 2026 would move Palou clear of that four-title group, leaving only Foyt and Dixon ahead. It would also give him a fourth straight championship. Palou claimed the 2021 title before winning three consecutive crowns from 2023 through 2025.
Comparing eras demands caution. Schedules, points systems, machinery and sanctioning structures have all changed. Championships, however, remain the broadest measure of performance across a full season, and Palou’s sustained results in contemporary spec-chassis competition give his record considerable weight.
Portland can sharpen the comparison
Portland opens the final six-race stretch on August 9. Palou heads to a circuit where Will Power won in 2024 and 2025. Christian Lundgaard, meanwhile, has scored more points on natural road courses than any other driver this season.
After Portland, the schedule continues through Markham, Washington, two Milwaukee races and Laguna Seca. Those events will test the range of Palou’s campaign. If he turns his 83-point advantage into title No. 5, the discussion will shift from whether he belongs among IndyCar’s greatest to how close he can get to Dixon and Foyt.
