Felix Rosenqvist moved straight into IndyCar’s championship drama by beating points leader Alex Palou to pole for the Grand Prix of Portland by just 0.018 seconds. The Meyer Shank Racing driver now has the best possible starting position for Sunday’s race.
Rosenqvist delivers under pressure
The Swede earned his second NTT P1 Award of 2026 after making steady gains throughout the Portland weekend. Teammate Marcus Armstrong had already shown Meyer Shank Racing’s speed by leading Saturday practice on alternate tires, then Rosenqvist delivered in qualifying.
The pole adds another chapter to a busy season that included victory in the 110th Indianapolis 500. Rosenqvist is seventh in the standings with 296 points, 161 behind Palou, but his pace puts him in position to affect the title battle even with his own championship chances remote.
Palou still controls the bigger picture
Losing pole by 0.018 seconds will hurt, but second place leaves Palou right where his rivals don’t want him, on the front row. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver reached Portland with five victories, six poles and 457 points from 12 starts.
Palou holds an 83-point lead over David Malukas and sits 87 ahead of Kyle Kirkwood. Christian Lundgaard is 104 points behind, while Pato O’Ward trails by 121, allowing the reigning champion to target another significant score rather than make an all-or-nothing attack.
Contenders face contrasting fortunes
Palou secured a front-row start, while two major challengers suffered expensive setbacks. Malukas came into the event as Palou’s nearest pursuer but was handed a grid penalty, making Team Penske’s effort to close the gap harder.
Lundgaard has even more ground to recover after multiple problems wrecked his qualifying. The setback carries added weight because the Arrow McLaren driver has ranked among the season’s strongest performers on natural road courses.

Portland could reshape the run-in
The race starts at 4 p. m. ET on August 9 at Portland International Raceway. It begins a demanding stretch that continues with Markham, Washington, D. C., a Milwaukee doubleheader and the Laguna Seca finale.
Rosenqvist starts with clean air and a quick Meyer Shank Racing package, while Palou lines up beside him carrying the championship lead. If Rosenqvist controls the opening phase, Portland may deliver an upset. If Palou takes the lead, he could make another major move toward the Astor Cup.
