Alex Palou earned his sixth win of 2026 at Portland, extending his IndyCar championship lead to 110 points with five races remaining.
Alex Palou won the 2026 Grand Prix of Portland on Sunday, moving another step closer to a fifth IndyCar championship. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver controlled the Aug. 9 race at Portland International Raceway, earning his sixth victory in 13 starts this season.
Palou converts front-row start
Felix Rosenqvist beat Palou to pole by 0.018 seconds in qualifying, but the championship leader turned the tables in the race. It was Palou's third Portland victory, following his July 20 win at Nashville Superspeedway.
The four-time champion's remarkable season continued. Palou has recorded 10 top-five finishes and placed in the top 10 in 11 of 13 races, leading 558 laps along the way.
Rosenqvist and Power complete podium
Rosenqvist finished second from pole, adding another strong result to a season featuring one victory and two poles. The Meyer Shank Racing driver climbed to sixth in the standings with 338 points.
Will Power finished third, capping a productive Portland weekend despite arriving without a win in 2026. Rinus VeeKay maintained his recent form in fourth, adding another top-five finish to his season.
Traffic emerged as a major post-race issue. Rosenqvist and Power criticized IndyCar's rules for slower cars, although their complaints did not change the podium order.
Championship advantage grows again
He has finished in the top 10 in 11 of his 13 starts this season.
Palou departs Portland with 510 points, giving him a 110-point advantage over Kyle Kirkwood. David Malukas is third with 392, eight points behind Kirkwood and 118 adrift of Palou.
Palou's advantage is substantial. He has six wins and six poles, while Kirkwood has one victory across the opening 13 rounds. Christian Lundgaard holds fourth with 375 points, ahead of Pato O'Ward on 355.
Five races remain. Palou's consistency has given him control of the championship, leaving his closest challengers needing victories and a significant downturn in his results.
Qualifying setbacks hurt challengers
Lundgaard started at the back after an electrical problem and hybrid failure disrupted the two-time 2026 winner. Malukas and Caio Collet also carried grid penalties into Sunday's race.
Those problems gave Palou a bigger opportunity to extend his lead, and he capitalized. Rosenqvist and Power claimed the other podium positions, with VeeKay taking fourth.
Portland provided further evidence of Palou's versatility. His six victories this year span street circuits, permanent road courses and Nashville's oval, with the run beginning at St. Petersburg on March 1.
Markham comes next
IndyCar returns Aug. 16 for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham, marking the series' first trip to the Streets of Markham. The race begins at noon ET, one week before the Aug. 23 event on the streets of Washington, D. C.
Palou heads to Ontario with 510 points and another opportunity to close in on title number five.
