Marc Márquez has reached 103 Grand Prix victories across all classes, putting him 12 behind Valentino Rossi and 19 behind record holder Giacomo Agostini. With the figures updated through late August 2026, MotoGP’s greatest-rider debate now features an active pursuit instead of another historical comparison.
The premier-class gap is closing
Rossi’s 89 victories in 500cc and MotoGP remain the premier-class standard. Márquez has between 73 and 76 in the latest updated record tables, with the difference based on when the 2026 results were added.
Márquez ranks second even at the lower total. Agostini recorded 68 premier-class wins and Mick Doohan earned 54, making Márquez the only active rider in position to challenge Rossi’s mark.
Márquez changes the title comparison
Márquez secured his seventh premier-class crown in 2025, drawing level with Rossi. His championship seasons are 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2025.
One rider remains ahead of both.
Agostini claimed eight 500cc championships from 1966 through 1972 and again in 1975. Márquez needs one more premier-class title to match him, while an eighth crown would take him past Rossi in that category.
Agostini holds the full-championship records
The order changes when every Grand Prix class is counted. Agostini leads with 15 world championships and 122 victories, amassed in 500cc and 350cc competition. Ángel Nieto ranks second in total championships with 13, earned mainly in the smaller-capacity categories.
Rossi collected nine championships and 115 race wins across 125cc, 250cc and the premier class. Márquez also holds nine championships, including his 125cc and Moto2 crowns, and his 103 victories put him third overall.
Rossi’s longevity keeps him apart
Rossi started 432 Grands Prix over 26 seasons from 1996 to 2021. His career totals include 235 podiums and 6,357 points, with 199 of those podiums coming in the premier class.
His first and last victories were separated by 20 years and 311 days. Rossi raced through the 500cc two-stroke period, the 990cc MotoGP formula and later technical eras, winning premier-class championships with Honda and Yamaha.
Three records shape the chase
Márquez is chasing distinct targets held by two riders. Agostini owns the records for total championships, total wins and premier-class titles. Rossi holds the marks for premier-class wins and career points.
Márquez’s next 2026 results will decide whether Rossi’s 115 all-class wins or Agostini’s eight premier-class championships becomes his immediate target. Rossi’s 89 top-class victories are still 13 to 16 wins away, depending on which updated 2026 count is used.
