Alex Palou joined IndyCar’s five-title club by clinching the 2026 championship at Milwaukee, giving him a total surpassed by only A. J. Foyt and Scott Dixon. At 29, his rapid rise invites a precise historical comparison based on the number of championships won by this point in a career.
Five titles move Palou into third
Foyt holds the championship record with seven, claimed in 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1967, 1975 and 1979. Dixon ranks second with six. Palou’s fifth title puts him alongside Mario Andretti in the next group.
The ranking covers IndyCar’s various sanctioning eras, from USAC to CART and the current series. Equipment and schedules changed, as did points systems, making the championship total the cleanest shared measure.
Palou’s pace shifts the comparison
Palou secured his fifth crown six seasons after making his IndyCar debut in 2020. He won the title in 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, with the last four coming consecutively.
Andretti’s four championships stretched from 1965 through 1984. Dixon claimed his first in 2003, then added his sixth in 2020. Foyt’s seven titles spanned 20 seasons, beginning in 1960 and ending in 1979.
Palou’s compressed run sets him apart.
He controlled the 2026 season
Across 17 starts, Palou has scored 607 points, six wins and eight poles. He has also recorded 12 top-five finishes, 14 top-10 results and 673 laps led.
Christian Lundgaard is second with 507 points, 100 behind, and Kyle Kirkwood trails him by another two points. Palou has twice the win total of Pato O’Ward, whose three victories include both Milwaukee races.
The figures pinpoint Palou’s clearest area of dominance. His eight poles account for nearly half of the 17-race total so far, and no championship rival has earned more than two.
One hurdle separates the eras
Palou’s record doesn’t include an Indianapolis 500 victory. Foyt won the race four times, Andretti took the 1969 edition, and Dixon won in 2008.
The omission doesn’t change the championship order, although it carries weight in wider assessments of IndyCar’s greatest drivers. Palou has won on street circuits and road courses, plus an oval victory at Nashville Superspeedway in 2026. Indianapolis is still the defining unchecked box.
Foyt’s record moves within reach
Another championship would put Palou level with Dixon on six. Two more would tie Foyt’s record of seven, while an eighth would set a new series benchmark.
The next data point comes Sunday, September 6, at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Palou heads into the Mission Foods Grand Prix of Monterey having won the circuit’s previous two IndyCar races, with a sixth victory of 2026 still on offer.
