Max Verstappen walked into McLaren’s motorhome at Spa, and Formula 1’s rumor mill quickly took over. His appearance became a major paddock talking point around the Belgian Grand Prix, although no negotiation or transfer has been confirmed.
A visit turns into a storyline
Drivers visit rival hospitality units for many routine reasons. With Verstappen, though, any contact with another leading team draws attention because his Red Bull future has already dominated silly-season discussion.
That distinction is important. Verstappen was seen visiting McLaren, but the available reporting offers no confirmation that contracts, seats, or future plans came up.
McLaren already has its lineup
McLaren has publicly emphasized stability, rather than suggesting an opening. CEO Zak Brown has repeated that Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are locked in, and both are among only five drivers in the reported grid snapshot said to hold contracts beyond 2026.
Verstappen is also in that group.
McLaren’s established lineup makes the rumor particularly hard to shape into a credible driver-market scenario. Signing Verstappen would require an available seat and a contractual route, along with a willingness to change a pairing McLaren has worked to secure.
Piastri rumor draws firm denials
Speculation has traveled in the other direction as well, linking Piastri to Red Bull because manager Mark Webber previously raced for the team. That theory has met direct pushback.

Those denials leave the McLaren and Red Bull discussion where it started, as paddock gossip with no evidence of an impending swap.
The 2027 market drives the speculation
The broader contract picture explains why a routine visit created so much noise. One circulating market assessment says 17 current drivers will be out of contract after 2026. Only Verstappen, Norris, Piastri, Charles Leclerc, and Pierre Gasly are listed as having deals beyond then.
It is a reported snapshot, rather than an official FIA contract registry, but it depicts a remarkably open market. Teams preparing for 2027 can evaluate a large pool of drivers, while managers have reason to establish options long before negotiations become public.
Hamilton provides one point of certainty
Lewis Hamilton’s situation is being presented differently. The Ferrari driver is reported as confirmed for 2027 and “100% clear” about his future, taking one prominent name out of the immediate speculation.
Attention will instead stay on Verstappen whenever he appears near another team. For now, the next concrete step belongs to Red Bull and McLaren on track, with both teams’ established drivers still contracted beyond 2026.
