Marco Bezzecchi returned from a fractured collarbone to lead a record-breaking British Grand Prix Friday for Aprilia at Silverstone.
Marco Bezzecchi returned at Silverstone with injury concerns, then ended Friday with the fastest MotoGP lap in the circuit’s history. The Aprilia rider’s emphatic response added another factor to a tight 2026 title fight.
Bezzecchi makes an immediate statement
Bezzecchi was declared fit on Thursday after fracturing his left collarbone at the Sachsenring. He completed his comeback by leading Friday practice, lowering Fabio Quartararo’s 2025 lap record by just under a second on his final run.
A warm, dry track and little wind produced an exceptionally fast session, with eight riders beating the previous benchmark. Trackhouse Aprilia teammates Ai Ogura and Raul Fernandez each spent time at the top before Bezzecchi set the decisive lap.
The factory Aprilia rider had already shown his pace in FP1, when he finished second behind Gresini Ducati’s Alex Marquez.
Pedro Acosta took third that morning despite crashing and moving to his second KTM.
Aprilia turns pressure into opportunity
Bezzecchi’s physical condition is still a concern over a full race distance. Friday’s pace, though, changed the complexion of his British Grand Prix. Instead of focusing on limiting the damage, he can now challenge at the front.
Aprilia also showed strength across its lineup. Ogura and Fernandez briefly led practice, proving the manufacturer’s speed extended beyond one rider. Fernandez arrived with his future secured after Trackhouse confirmed him through 2028.
A title fight gains another variable
Silverstone hosts round 12 on August 7-9, opening the second half of the season at a circuit known for unpredictable results. Marc Marquez arrived after a perfect Sachsenring weekend revived his championship push. Bezzecchi’s rapid return means the leading contenders cannot expect his injury to reduce the competition.
Qualifying, the Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix will test Bezzecchi’s shoulder more severely than one flying lap.
Friday set the expectation for the rest of the weekend: Aprilia has the speed, and its injured title contender is firmly in the fight.
