Jorge Martin converted pole into MotoGP Sprint victory at Silverstone, strengthening his championship lead as Aprilia secured an unprecedented 1-2-3 and Marc Marquez endured a difficult Saturday.
Martin controls the Sprint
Martin led the British Grand Prix Sprint from start to finish. He beat Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura and factory Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi, giving the Noale manufacturer its first MotoGP Sprint podium sweep.
His control followed a close qualifying fight. Martin defeated Raul Fernandez by just 0.021 seconds to claim pole and the lap record, becoming the eighth different polesitter in eight Grands Prix at Silverstone.
Aprilia’s depth shifts the picture
Martin took the victory, but Aprilia filled all three Sprint podium places. Fernandez had already shown the Trackhouse bike’s speed by narrowly missing pole.
Ogura’s second place confirmed the satellite team as a consistent threat. Bezzecchi’s third carried its own significance because he raced with a recently fractured left collarbone and had admitted he wasn’t back to full fitness.
Silverstone’s unusually favorable conditions produced quick lap times across the field, and Aprilia repeatedly turned that opportunity into results. Eight riders broke the previous circuit record on Friday, while the manufacturer’s bikes set the benchmark throughout the weekend.
Marquez encounters an unexpected problem
Marquez arrived with momentum from a perfect Sachsenring round. Silverstone told a different story.
He had already acknowledged limitations in corners that once ranked among his strengths before suffering a major tire-performance drop during the Sprint. The reigning champion’s difficult race carried added weight because Martin took maximum advantage, winning while Marquez was unable to challenge the Aprilias.
Saturday produced a potentially important swing in a title contest that had tightened before the break.
Sunday brings a tougher test
Aprilia must now carry its short-race advantage over Grand Prix distance. Tire behavior and Silverstone’s changeable conditions could alter the order, along with Ducati’s expected response.
For now, Martin has pole position and a Sprint victory, with a strong group of Aprilia riders around him. Sunday’s longer race will show whether that pace can last over Grand Prix distance.
