Lewis Hamilton’s first Ferrari victory changed the 2026 scorecard and extended one of Formula 1’s clearest measures of longevity. The seven-time world champion won at Barcelona-Catalunya on June 14, stretching his victory record across nearly two decades and three constructors.
A winning span reaches 20 seasons
Hamilton scored his first Formula 1 win with McLaren at the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix. His latest came in 2026, giving him victories across 20 championship seasons when counted inclusively.
The run crosses several technical eras, from the V8 period to the turbo-hybrid age that began in 2014 and the new regulations introduced for 2026.
Three constructors join the record
Ferrari became the third constructor Hamilton has represented on the top step after his Barcelona-Catalunya victory. He first won with McLaren, added further victories during his record-breaking Mercedes career, and has now delivered one for the Scuderia.
Hamilton finished 19.561 seconds ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell, while Lando Norris took third, 23.719 seconds behind the winner.
How the numbers frame greatness
Championships and total victories remain central to any Formula 1 G. O. A. T. comparison. Hamilton shares the drivers’ title record of seven with Michael Schumacher. His career victory total also stands above Schumacher’s 91.
Longevity brings another measure. Staying competitive requires a driver to handle changing cars and regulations, along with different teammates and organizations. Winning for three constructors does not settle the argument on its own. It does, however, show adaptability that a comparison based on peak seasons cannot capture.
Ferrari echoes without equivalence
A recent report said former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley sees similarities between Hamilton and Schumacher in how team personnel perceive them.
Their circumstances are not identical. Schumacher joined Ferrari before its dominant run, while Hamilton arrived as an established seven-time champion. The stronger comparison comes from their results, as both won for multiple teams, secured seven titles and delivered victories for Ferrari. Hamilton’s Barcelona-Catalunya result strengthened that link while adding a distinct three-constructor arc to his career.
The next historical test
Hamilton’s win came during a varied 2026 season. Through Hungary, Kimi Antonelli has taken six victories and Russell has two, while Charles Leclerc and Norris have one apiece.
Formula 1 returns at the Dutch Grand Prix on August 21-23. Another Ferrari victory would build Hamilton’s late-career chapter, although sustained contention is the larger target. Turning this breakthrough into a championship challenge would shift the debate from longevity to whether a third team can carry him to an unprecedented eighth crown.
