KTM has permission to open and repair its sealed RC16 engines for reliability reasons before the 2026 Aragon Grand Prix.
KTM has received permission to open and repair its sealed MotoGP engines before the Aragon Grand Prix, handing the struggling RC16 project a strictly controlled chance to address reliability.
The exception follows a series of technical problems and required approval from rival manufacturers. KTM cannot introduce performance upgrades, although any dispensation involving sealed engines carries political significance in a paddock where development limits are closely protected.
Rivals reverse their position
Manufacturers first opposed KTM's request, then approved the work ahead of Aragon. The repairs must target reliability faults and cannot provide additional speed.
That distinction will draw close scrutiny.
KTM arrives at the next round needing to show that the dispensation can prevent failures without altering the RC16's competitive level. MotoGP's sealed-engine rules are intended to limit in-season development, so rival factories will monitor the scope of the repairs and KTM's performance afterward.
Viñales injury adds uncertainty
Maverick Viñales' shoulder injury has further complicated KTM's 2026 campaign. The issue stems from his Sachsenring crash in July 2025, and Pol Espargaró replaced him at Silverstone for his first Grand Prix appearance of this season.
Reports that KTM may remove Viñales immediately are still speculation. He missed the British Grand Prix because of injury, and no contractual split has been confirmed.
A lengthy recovery would keep KTM and Tech3 at the center of 2027 rider-market discussions. The factory has to fix its mechanical problems while determining when Viñales can return.
Aprilia increases the competitive pressure
The timing presents another problem for KTM, with Aprilia now setting the benchmark. Raúl Fernández led an Aprilia sweep at Silverstone, securing his second career MotoGP victory and becoming the seventh different winner through 12 rounds in 2026.
Jorge Martin placed second and extended his championship lead to 31 points, while injured teammate Marco Bezzecchi finished third. Aprilia secured its third podium lockout of the season after Le Mans and Assen, along with its seventh victory of 2026.
Aprilia also brought swingarm winglets to Silverstone, showing that its aerodynamic program is still advancing while KTM uses exceptional engine access to address reliability faults.
Aragon becomes KTM's audit
The engine ruling makes Aragon an immediate public test for the RC16 repairs. A trouble-free weekend would support KTM's reliability case. More failures would deepen concerns over the extent of the factory's technical problems.
Before the bikes take to the track, KTM will open the affected sealed engines and carry out the approved repairs for the Aragon Grand Prix.
