Ferrari won the Lone Star Le Mans on Sunday, September 6, after a late hydraulic failure for Toyota reshaped the closing stages at Circuit of the Americas. The victory capped a dramatic weekend after Antonio Giovinazzi had already secured Hypercar pole for Ferrari.
Toyota loses victory late
Toyota reached the final phase of the Austin race in position to win, but the hydraulic problem brought its challenge to an end. Ferrari took over the lead and carried it to victory.
The reversal hit the Japanese manufacturer hard.
Toyota had enjoyed a strong run earlier in the 2026 season. Victory for the No. 7 car at Le Mans, backed by third place for the No. 8, moved the manufacturer to the top of the Hypercar standings after three rounds.
Ferrari completes its Texas turnaround
Ferrari showed immediate pace in Austin. Antonio Giovinazzi led Antonio Fuoco in a Ferrari one-two during opening practice, then Aston Martin moved to the front in the following two sessions.
Giovinazzi claimed pole after setting an identical qualifying time to Cadillac’s leading challenger. With the times level, Ferrari gained the starting advantage under the qualifying order.
Victory followed on Sunday, though Toyota’s late mechanical trouble opened the door rather than Ferrari controlling the race uninterrupted from the front.
Aston Martin converts LMGT3 form
Aston Martin also departed Texas with a win. The Heart of Racing took the LMGT3 class after Aston Martin led the category in second practice and extended its run of COTA poles during qualifying.
The manufacturer delivered pace in both classes throughout the weekend. Harry Tincknell moved Aston Martin to the top of the Hypercar order in second practice, and the marque remained there in third practice ahead of Genesis and Cadillac.
The title fight moves to Japan
Ferrari’s result brought another change in a season that saw Toyota lead the Hypercar standings after Le Mans, while BMW recorded its second Hypercar victory of 2026 at São Paulo.
The Austin weekend produced no driver-market announcement or confirmed silly-season development. Attention now turns from Texas to the next championship round.
Fuji stages the next race on September 27, leaving Toyota three weeks to answer on home soil after its Austin hydraulic failure.
