Pedro Acosta led Pol Espargaro in a KTM one-two during FP1 at the Red Bull Ring, with Jorge Martin third as MotoGP's tied title fight resumed.
Pedro Acosta put KTM on top at its home Grand Prix on Friday, September 18, leading Pol Espargaro in the opening MotoGP session at the Red Bull Ring. Jorge Martin completed the top three as Round 15 of the 2026 season began with the championship leaders tied.
KTM's one-two delivered an immediate home result, although FP1 provided an early indication rather than a firm forecast. The session ran two seconds off the circuit's outright lap time and one-third of a second slower than the race lap record.
Acosta starts Austria on top
Acosta arrived in Austria with five podiums during the 2026 season and promptly put the RC16 at the head of the order. Espargaro took second while replacing the injured Maverick Viñales at Tech3.
Both KTM teams made a strong start.
Espargaro's appearance marks another enforced grid change. Viñales remains sidelined, so KTM's test rider is handling race duties during the manufacturer's home weekend from September 18 to 20.
Takaaki Nakagami is also competing as a replacement at the Red Bull Ring. He has taken Joan Mir's place, with Mir's number 36 missing from the Austrian weekend.
Martin opens level with Marquez
Martin took third at the beginning of a weekend that he and Marc Marquez entered with 274 championship points apiece. Marquez leads the standings after claiming his 78th MotoGP victory at the San Marino Grand Prix on September 13.
That Misano outcome followed Marco Bezzecchi's crash on Lap 1. Bezzecchi arrives in Austria third in the standings with 241 points, 33 behind both leaders.
Marquez erased a 102-point deficit across seven rounds on his way back to the top. After 14 rounds, the championship arrived in Austria with eight events listed on the schedule.
The teams' standings have a different order. Aprilia Racing leads on 515 points, Ducati Team has 417 and Trackhouse Racing Team occupies third with 402.
Ogura faces another medical review
Ai Ogura returned to action after passing a medical check on Thursday, September 17. The Trackhouse rider received clearance specifically for FP1 and was scheduled for another assessment after the session.
His status is therefore one of the immediate matters to resolve before Friday afternoon's Practice session. It starts at 15:00 local time and decides which riders advance directly into the second qualifying session.
Ogura's participation also carries weight for Trackhouse, which begins the weekend third in the championship with 402 points. Whether he continues depends on the follow-up assessment, rather than Thursday's initial clearance alone.
Friday Practice raises the pace
The FP1 times showed plenty of scope for improvement before Friday's decisive session. Acosta's place at the front gives KTM the first headline, but the slower pace leaves the order open to substantial changes once riders push for direct qualifying spots.
Martin already has a top-three result to start the weekend. Marquez arrives after reversing the course of the 2026 championship over the previous seven rounds. Bezzecchi, meanwhile, is looking to respond to his opening-lap retirement at Misano while holding his place in the title fight.
Round 15 resumes with Practice at 15:00 on September 18.
Saturday brings qualifying and the Sprint
Austria's schedule packs the competitive sessions into a busy Saturday. FP2 starts at 10:10 on September 19, with Q1 at 10:50 and Q2 at 11:15. The Sprint gets underway at 15:00.
The main race is set for Sunday, September 20. Warm-up starts at 09:40, followed by the Austrian Grand Prix at 14:00.
The championship then moves into its next stretch of overseas events. The Japanese Grand Prix runs from October 2 to 4, followed by Indonesia from October 9 to 11 and Australia from October 23 to 25.
First, Acosta, Espargaro and the rest of the MotoGP field return for Friday Practice at 15:00, with direct entry to Q2 offering the Austrian weekend's first concrete prize.
