Hamlin has 2,168 points through the postseason’s second race. Larson follows with 2,159, and Christopher Bell sits third on 2,150. Just 18 points cover the top three before the Cup field gets on track at Bristol on Friday, September 18.
The schedule is tight. Cup practice begins Friday at 4:30 p. m., with qualifying following at 5:40 p. m. Saturday’s race is set for 7:30 p. m. on September 19, and all times are displayed in the viewer’s local time.
Larson arrives after ending long drought
Larson reshaped the standings with his Gateway victory, which snapped a 51-race winless streak and gave him his first Cup win in 16 months.
Hendrick Motorsports also secured a 1-2 finish. Alex Bowman came home second, with Joey Logano completing the top three. Larson scored 73 points in the event, while Bowman collected 38 and Logano earned 54.
The result lifted Larson to second in the postseason standings.
His Gateway breakthrough came after Bell passed him to win the Southern 500 in the Chase opener at Darlington. It was Bell’s first victory of the 2026 season, meaning two different contenders won the opening two postseason races.
Hamlin has kept the points lead after both events. He heads to Bristol nine points clear of Larson, with Bell another nine points back, so the margins are narrow before Friday’s track action.
Stage points add another Bristol pressure point
Stage scoring is a major part of the Chase discussion heading into Bristol, especially with only 18 points covering the top three drivers.
The format awards points during the race and at the finish. Gateway illustrated how those totals can vary from the finishing order. Larson won with 73 points, while third-place Logano scored 54. Bowman crossed the line between them but earned 38.

There’s little time to reset afterward. Kansas II runs from September 24 through September 27, followed by Las Vegas II from October 1 through October 4. Charlotte II is slated for October 8 through October 11.
That schedule packs four Cup weekends into less than a month, starting with Bristol practice at 4:30 p. m. on September 18 and continuing through Charlotte’s October 8 to October 11 event.
Nobody has a full-race advantage atop the standings. Larson can wipe out his nine-point deficit at Bristol, while Bell starts the weekend 18 points behind Hamlin.
Legacy Motor Club makes immediate change
Beyond the championship battle, Legacy Motor Club confirmed an immediate crew chief change on September 18. The personnel switch adds another development to a weekend focused largely on the Chase and Bristol’s Friday sessions.
It is the latest confirmed team update before Cup cars take to the track. The available announcement did not include a driver transaction alongside the crew chief change.
Another confirmed move for 2027 is already on the Cup grid’s horizon. Austin Hill will become a full-time Cup driver for Richard Childress Racing next season. When that move was listed, Hill had made 15 Cup starts in 2026 without recording a top-10 finish.
Three contenders carry the recent victories
Bell and Larson split the first two Chase victories. Bell began the postseason by passing Larson to win at Darlington for his first victory of the year, before Larson answered at Gateway with a win that ended his 51-race drought.
Hamlin still leads.
