Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin reach Austria tied on 274 points as MotoGP deals with rider absences, a possible return and weaker ticket sales.
Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin enter the Austrian Grand Prix weekend tied on 274 points, with MotoGP’s championship leaders arriving at the Red Bull Ring on September 18 to 20 with nothing between them.
Round 15 comes after Marquez won at Misano on Sunday, September 13. He has now erased a 102-point deficit from seven rounds ago, while Marco Bezzecchi’s Lap 1 crash left the Aprilia rider third in the standings with 241 points.
The next chapter begins Friday morning.
Level after 14 rounds
Marquez earned 25 points with his 78th MotoGP victory at the San Marino Grand Prix. Alex Marquez took second and 20 points, while Pedro Acosta finished third for 16 points.
Martin still had enough points to stay level with Marquez after 14 rounds, and on September 17 he gave an unusual account of their season-long contest. Martin said he has “never” battled Marquez during the 2026 title fight.
Bezzecchi is 33 points behind the two leaders. Aprilia Racing has a comfortable lead in the team championship, though, with 515 points. Ducati Team sits on 417, and Trackhouse Racing Team is third with 402.
Fabio Di Giannantonio also rejected the idea that the calendar can be cleanly split into venues expected to favor particular manufacturers.
Eight rounds were listed as remaining after Misano, so Austria carries immediate weight without deciding the championship on its own. The Japanese Grand Prix comes next on October 2 to 4, followed by the Indonesian Grand Prix on October 9 to 11.
Austria’s grid takes a different shape
Joan Mir will sit out the Austrian Grand Prix, and Takaaki Nakagami will replace him at Honda. Mir suffered from a lack of strength and general malaise during the Misano weekend, with subsequent blood tests finding abnormalities that require further investigation.
Tech3 has another confirmed replacement. Pol Espargaro will take the injured Maverick Viñales’ place at KTM’s home event.
Espargaro also attracted attention on September 17 with his verdict on Acosta, saying the KTM rider may be “better” than the version of Marquez he saw at Honda. Acosta heads to Austria after finishing on the Misano podium behind the Marquez brothers.
Ai Ogura is aiming to return with Trackhouse, pending a medical review on Thursday. He broke his first right metacarpal before the Aragon round, then missed both Aragon and Misano.
Red Bull Ring confronts attendance decline
The Red Bull Ring’s attendance figures bring a separate concern to a weekend centered on the tied championship fight. Sunday crowds topped 90,000 before the pandemic, but that number dropped to barely 50,000 in 2025. On September 17, ticket sales for the 2026 event were reported to be tracking even lower.
The decline provides the commercial backdrop for a busy schedule at Spielberg. Free Practice 1 starts at 10:45 on Friday, September 18, before Practice at 15:00.
Free Practice 2 opens Saturday’s action at 10:10. Q1 starts at 10:50, Q2 at 11:15 and the Sprint at 15:00. Sunday warm-up begins at 09:40, followed by the Grand Prix at 14:00.
Bagnaia looks for an answer
Francesco Bagnaia arrives in Austria with Ducati still facing an unresolved technical issue. He said the manufacturer had no explanation for the “big difference” between his motorcycle and the other GP26 machines.
That problem runs alongside a title fight headed by another Ducati rider. Marquez’s Misano victory drew him level with Martin, while Ducati sits 98 points behind Aprilia in the team standings.
Yamaha chief Massimo Meregalli also addressed a warning from much earlier on September 17, saying Valentino Rossi had identified fundamental problems “10 years ago.” His admission came in a season when Yamaha’s 2027 rider lineup is already confirmed, with Martin and Ogura set to join the manufacturer.
Another name joins Tech3’s future
As Tech3 readies Espargaro for Austria, the team has finalized its 2027 pairing. Australian rider Senna Agius will make his MotoGP debut with Tech3 KTM next season alongside Luca Marini.
The announcement on Wednesday, September 16, made Agius the fifth confirmed rookie for 2027. At the time, he held fourth in the 2026 Moto2 championship, 83.5 points behind championship leader and teammate Manu Gonzalez.
Agius won’t reach the premier-class grid until the next technical era starts. Before then, the current field must tackle Austria, beginning with Ogura’s Thursday medical review ahead of Free Practice 1 at 10:45 on Friday.
