Joey Logano’s 40th Cup victory moved him within 16 points of Kyle Larson as NASCAR’s Chase heads from Bristol to Kansas.
Joey Logano thrust himself into NASCAR’s tightest championship fight Saturday night, winning the 2026 Bristol Night Race after Ty Gibbs and Carson Hocevar created an opening on the final restart.
Logano departed Bristol Motor Speedway with 73 points and the 40th NASCAR Cup Series victory of his career. Kyle Larson finished second, Hocevar was third and Christopher Bell took fourth in race three of the 10-race Chase.
That result left three former Cup champions separated by 16 points atop the standings. Larson leads on 2,206 points, Denny Hamlin trails by one, and Logano has 2,190.
Logano takes his chance
Larson started from pole after rain canceled qualifying, but Logano finished the night out front. Gibbs and Hocevar ran each other up the track on the final restart, giving Logano the opening he needed to grab the lead.
Larson recovered to finish second, ahead of Hocevar. His runner-up result earned 47 points and moved him past Hamlin, who arrived at Bristol as the championship leader after the first two Chase events.
Logano collected 73 points, 32 more than third-place Hocevar and 26 more than Larson. The gain moved Logano into third in the standings through three Chase races.
The run to the flag was anything but quiet.
The victory also gave the postseason a different winner in each race. Bell passed defending champion Larson to win the Southern 500 at Darlington, before Larson snapped a 51-race winless streak at Gateway. That Gateway triumph was Larson’s first Cup victory in 16 months.
Larson leads Hamlin by one point
Larson’s total of 2,206 points leaves him with the narrowest possible lead over Hamlin and seven Chase races remaining. Logano sits 16 points behind after Bristol.
The current format includes 16 drivers over the final 10 races, with the title settled at Homestead-Miami Speedway in mid-November. The Chase continues adding results through the finale rather than eliminating drivers along the way.
That format made Logano’s Bristol haul especially important. His win followed Bell’s Darlington victory and Larson’s Gateway success across the opening three rounds, while Larson and Hamlin are now split by a single point.
Bell kept his strong Chase start going with a fourth-place finish after winning the Southern 500.
The standings beyond the confirmed top three don’t alter the immediate picture. Larson leads Hamlin by one, and Logano has cut the gap to 16 points before Kansas.
Hocevar’s podium leads to pit-road fight
Hocevar earned 41 points, and his third-place result put him in the official top three with Logano and Larson. His night then ended with a physical confrontation after the race.
Hocevar punched Ryan Blaney after their late clash. It came after contact between Gibbs and Hocevar on the final restart helped Logano move ahead, adding a pit-road fight to an already combative finish.
“They got an old-school Bristol show.”
The latest information after the race included no confirmed penalty, leaving the known sequence at the on-track clash and postrace punch. Any disciplinary outcome would need a later decision.
Gibbs carried a special M&M’s Kyle Busch tribute at Bristol. He described driving the scheme as “Something I'll never forget.”
Bowman admits awkward Bristol mistake
Alex Bowman’s Bristol race ended with another unusual episode. He said his awkward crash embarrassed him and acknowledged that he didn’t know who the leader was at the time.
Brad Keselowski, meanwhile, offered a blunt explanation for his radio outburst toward Ford leadership.
“I wanted to win.”
The comments came during a Bristol weekend that also featured an active off-track dispute. Spire released a statement criticizing Joe Gibbs Racing, while Joe Gibbs Racing filed motions seeking sanctions against Spire and Chris Gabehart. It also asked Judge Rodriguez to find the defendants in contempt of court.
The filings and public statement are separate from the Cup championship battle, but they will keep the discussion between Bristol and Kansas focused on matters beyond points and results.
Kansas opens the next Chase phase
The NASCAR Cup Series heads next to Kansas for the September 24 to 27 event, race four of the Chase. Las Vegas follows from October 1 to 4, then Charlotte is scheduled for October 8 to 11.
Larson will reach Kansas one point ahead of Hamlin. Logano arrives with the Bristol trophy, 2,190 points and a 16-point deficit following his 40th Cup victory.
