Christian Lundgaard’s road-course form gives IndyCar’s distant title challengers an opening as Alex Palou takes an 83-point lead into Portland.
Alex Palou heads to Portland International Raceway with an 83-point championship lead, while Christian Lundgaard arrives with the road-course form to disrupt his title charge. Six races remain, and Portland offers IndyCar’s chasing pack a chance to close the gap before Palou strengthens his grip.
Lundgaard brings proven Portland credentials
Lundgaard has scored more points on natural road courses than any other IndyCar driver this season. The Arrow McLaren racer won at both the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course and Road America, establishing him as a leading threat on Portland’s 1.964-mile, 12-turn layout.
The championship math is less favorable. Lundgaard ranks fourth with 353 points, 104 behind Palou, so a strong finish won’t change the fight by itself. He must maximize his weekend and needs Palou to run into trouble.
Palou’s challengers need a combined response
Palou leads the standings with 457 points after five victories, six poles and 498 laps led through 12 starts. Nashville pushed his advantage over David Malukas to 83 points, with Kyle Kirkwood 87 behind.
- David Malukas: Second with 374 points, six top-five finishes and 10 top-10s.
- Kyle Kirkwood: Third with 370, including seven top-five results and 11 top-10s.
- Christian Lundgaard: Fourth with 353 and the season’s highest natural-road-course points total.
- Pato O’Ward: Fifth with 336, trailing Palou by 121 points.
Those gaps leave little space for conservative racing. Portland opens a varied six-round stretch that includes the Markham and Washington street races, a Milwaukee doubleheader and the Laguna Seca finale.
Portland offers a chance to reset the closing sprint
Recent results favor neither Palou nor Lundgaard, as Will Power won at Portland in each of the past two seasons. Lundgaard’s 2026 road-course record, however, makes him the clearest immediate obstacle to another Palou victory.
The OnlyBulls Grand Prix of Portland starts at 4 p. m. ET on August 9. A third win would let Lundgaard maintain pressure on the leader and potentially move closer to Malukas and Kirkwood. If Palou beats the road-course benchmark, his pursuers may have to focus on limiting their losses before Markham.
