Toyota leads the FIA World Endurance Championship at the summer pause, but BMW’s breakthrough in Brazil has brought another genuine contender into the fight before the season resumes.
Toyota holds the advantage
Toyota tops the Hypercar standings after the first half of the eight-round 2026 season. The No. 7 won at Le Mans, while the No. 8 finished third.
Those results delivered a major haul of championship points and another clear display of Toyota’s endurance-racing strength. Four events are complete. Four remain, leaving the Japanese manufacturer with plenty of work ahead as it defends the lead.
BMW turns pace into a warning
BMW changed the shape of the title chase by winning the 6 Hours of São Paulo. Kevin Magnussen, Raffaele Marciello and Dries Vanthoor took victory for the No. 15 crew, beating Ferrari in a chaotic race.
It was BMW’s second Hypercar win of 2026, confirming that the program can turn its pace into major points under pressure. Its championship challenge now has race-winning proof behind it.
Ferrari and Cadillac stay dangerous
Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado and Antonio Giovinazzi finished second for Ferrari in Brazil, despite the team indicating that it had not expected a podium there. Extracting that result from a difficult weekend can keep a championship bid alive.
Cadillac also displayed its potential at Interlagos. Will Stevens led a front-row lockout in qualifying, then Stevens, Norman Nato and Louis Delétraz finished third. The result confirmed Cadillac’s raw speed, although turning qualifying strength into race results remains central to its title hopes.
COTA starts the decisive run
Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of the Americas is next, running from September 4-6. WEC then heads to Fuji on September 25-27 and Barcelona on October 15-18 before the November 8 finale at Monza.
Toyota will begin that four-round stretch as the leader and the team to beat. BMW arrives as the latest proven winner, with Ferrari and Cadillac carrying enough speed to punish any mistake.
COTA will show whether Brazil was an isolated twist or the moment WEC’s title fight opened up.
