Antonelli’s Ferrari answer lands amid Mercedes title charge

4September 18, 2026

Kimi Antonelli has discussed a possible Ferrari future while taking an 81-point lead in the 2026 Formula 1 championship to Azerbaijan.

Kimi Antonelli discussed the possibility of joining Ferrari in the future with the Italian Mercedes driver’s commanding 2026 Formula 1 title campaign continuing to draw attention.

Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship with 292 points after winning the Spanish Grand Prix on September 13. Mercedes teammate George Russell is second on 211, giving Antonelli an 81-point advantage with nine rounds remaining. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix, scheduled for September 24 to 26, is next.

Ferrari has not announced a move. Antonelli remains a Mercedes driver and central to the team’s championship push.

Ferrari talk follows Antonelli’s eight-win surge

Antonelli has won eight of the first 14 Grands Prix in 2026. He triumphed in China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco, Belgium, Italy and Spain, putting Mercedes in control of the drivers’ standings before Baku.

His latest victory came in Madrid, where he beat Max Verstappen by 4.3 seconds, with Lando Norris 5 seconds behind the winner.

That result extended a winning run restarted at Monza on September 6, when Antonelli finished 3.8 seconds ahead of Russell. The consecutive victories increased his championship lead after Norris won in Hungary and the Netherlands.

Antonelli’s nationality and his Italian Grand Prix victory for Mercedes give the Ferrari question added significance. However, no confirmed driver-market development links him to a switch. His comments concerned a hypothetical future, not an active transfer.

Mercedes has the strongest driver pairing

Russell is still Antonelli’s closest championship rival with 211 points. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton ranks third on 191, five points ahead of Norris, while Charles Leclerc holds fifth with 167.

Verstappen sits sixth on 145 points, 147 behind Antonelli. The Red Bull driver joked about the deficit this week.

“I’m definitely not having a comeback!”

Verstappen followed third place at Monza with second in Spain. He has scored 145 points across the opening 14 rounds, compared with Antonelli’s 292.

Mercedes has begun work on its 2027 car. The team’s development program for next season “started a while ago,” despite its current drivers occupying the top two positions in the 2026 standings.

That confirmed technical program does not change Antonelli’s present status. Mercedes will head to Azerbaijan with the championship leader and his nearest pursuer contracted to the same team.

Hamilton ends his title bid

Hamilton said there is “no stopping Antonelli” and declared his own 2026 championship challenge over after Madrid. A brake issue forced the Ferrari driver to retire from the Spanish Grand Prix on a weekend when Antonelli secured another win.

Hamilton has 191 points, leaving him 101 behind the leader and 20 adrift of Russell. Norris trails Hamilton by five, while Ferrari teammate Leclerc is another 24 points back.

Hamilton’s sole victory this season came at Barcelona-Catalunya on June 14. Leclerc then won the British Grand Prix on July 5, giving Ferrari two victories from the opening 14 races.

Italian media reports also claimed Hamilton wanted Ferrari to replace some on-track personnel. He firmly denied demanding staffing changes, and no confirmed personnel move is connected to those reports.

Pressure talk builds before Baku

Nico Rosberg warned that Antonelli could become “more and more panicked” during the title fight. The former champion’s remark was a prediction, not evidence of an issue within Mercedes.

Antonelli has extended his advantage over the past two rounds. He won at Monza and Madrid, while Russell placed second in Italy and fifth in Spain.

Four other drivers have won Grands Prix in 2026. Russell claimed Australia and Austria, while Norris won Hungary and the Netherlands. Hamilton prevailed at Barcelona-Catalunya, and Leclerc took victory in Great Britain. Antonelli won the other eight completed races.

Oscar Piastri is seventh with 120 points. Isack Hadjar holds eighth on 71, ahead of Liam Lawson with 59 and Pierre Gasly with 41.

Azerbaijan opens a demanding run

Azerbaijan hosts the next round from September 24 to 26. Bahrain follows on October 2 to 4, before Singapore on October 9 to 11.

Formula 1 then heads to the United States from October 23 to 25 and Mexico from October 30 to November 1. Brazil is scheduled for November 6 to 8, followed by Las Vegas from November 19 to 21 and Qatar from November 27 to 29.

The season finale will take place in Abu Dhabi from December 4 to 6.

Antonelli reaches Baku with 292 points, eight Grand Prix victories and an 81-point advantage over Russell. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend starts on September 24.
