Carson Hocevar finished third at Bristol, then punched Ryan Blaney after their late clash as NASCAR’s title fight tightened Saturday night.
Carson Hocevar left Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 19, with a third-place finish, 41 points and a postrace confrontation that ended when he punched Ryan Blaney.
The altercation came after a late incident between the two drivers in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Bristol Night Race. Hocevar gave a blunt assessment afterward.
“They got an old-school Bristol show.”
The third race of the 10-event Chase delivered a volatile finish, a new championship leader and Joey Logano’s 40th career Cup victory.
Hocevar finishes third after late disorder
Hocevar had already made his mark on the result before his confrontation with Blaney. He earned 41 points by finishing behind Logano and Kyle Larson at one of NASCAR’s toughest short tracks.
The final restart shuffled the running order. Hocevar and Ty Gibbs pushed each other up the track, opening the door for Logano to take the lead. Logano held the position for the victory, with Larson second and Hocevar third.
The postrace punch then turned the focus to Hocevar’s dispute with Blaney.
Hocevar departs Bristol eighth in the standings on 2,121 points, 85 behind Larson. Blaney ranks sixth with 2,154, leaving him 52 points back.
Logano seizes opening on final restart
Logano scored 73 points at Bristol, well ahead of Larson’s 47 and Hocevar’s 41. The win lifted Logano to third in the championship standings with 2,190 points.
He trails by 16 points.
Larson started from pole after rain canceled qualifying. He didn’t turn that starting spot into a win, but his runner-up finish put him atop the Cup standings following Saturday night’s race.
Christopher Bell placed fourth. His response summed up the draw of a race featuring tight short-track competition and a fiery aftermath.
“Bristol’s just the best.”
Bell sits fourth in the standings with 2,189 points, one behind Logano and 17 behind Larson.
Larson leads Hamlin by one point
Larson leads the NASCAR Cup Series standings with 2,206 points. Denny Hamlin ranks second on 2,205.
The championship is separated by one point after three Chase races. Just 17 points cover the top four, with Logano and Bell immediately behind Larson and Hamlin.
A bigger gap follows. Gibbs stands fifth with 2,164 points, 42 behind the leader, while Blaney is 52 back. Tyler Reddick occupies seventh on 2,145 points, a deficit of 61.
The Chase returned in 2026 after last being used in 2013. Sixteen drivers are competing for the Cup championship over the final 10 races, and the title is scheduled to be settled at Homestead-Miami Speedway in mid-November.
Bristol changes the lower half
Chase Briscoe is ninth behind Hocevar with 2,119 points. Bubba Wallace comes next on 2,114, followed by Austin Cindric with 2,090.
Cindric has a one-point advantage over Chase Elliott, who ranks 12th on 2,089. William Byron follows with 2,085.
Ryan Preece and Chris Buescher are level on 2,082 points, 124 behind Larson. Daniel Suárez sits 16th with 2,072, leaving him 134 points off the championship lead after Bristol.
Points remain cumulative under the restored Chase system. Stage points and finishing points will keep determining the order across the remaining races before the Homestead-Miami finale.
Kansas starts the next phase
The Cup field heads from Bristol to Kansas II, scheduled for September 24 through September 27. It is the next stop in the championship run.
Las Vegas II comes next from October 1 through October 4. Charlotte II is listed afterward for October 8 through October 11.
Larson takes a one-point championship lead to Kansas, while Logano heads west after winning at Bristol and cutting his deficit to 16 points. Hocevar’s next on-track appearance will be his first since the postrace clash with Blaney and his declaration that Bristol’s crowd received “an old-school Bristol show.”
