Antonelli takes commanding title lead into Singapore showdown

1October 7, 2026

Kimi Antonelli will arrive at the Singapore Grand Prix leading the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ championship by 84 points, with the Marina Bay Sprint weekend beginning on Friday, October 9.

The Mercedes driver has 320 points after 16 rounds. Teammate George Russell is second on 236, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton sits third with 214. Seven Grands Prix remain, beginning with Round 17 in Singapore.

Eight wins underpin Antonelli’s advantage

Antonelli’s championship position rests on eight Grand Prix victories across the opening 16 rounds. His first came at the Chinese Grand Prix on March 15, followed by wins in Japan, Miami, Canada and Monaco.

He added another victory in Belgium before winning consecutive September races in Italy and Spain. That sequence means Antonelli has won half of the Grands Prix held so far this season.

His record covers a range of circuits. The eight wins include street venues in Miami and Monaco, as well as permanent tracks such as Suzuka, Monza and Spa-Francorchamps.

Mercedes has also won three races with Russell. The Briton opened the season with victory in Australia, won again in Austria and took the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 26. Between them, Antonelli and Russell have accounted for 11 of the 16 Grand Prix victories in 2026.

Mercedes teammate remains nearest challenger

Russell remains Antonelli’s closest challenger in the official standings despite the 84-point gap. The Mercedes pairing is separated from the rest of the leading group, with Hamilton 106 points behind Antonelli.

Hamilton has 214 points after securing Ferrari’s first victory of the season at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix in June. Charles Leclerc, who won the British Grand Prix in July, is fourth with 191.

Lando Norris and Max Verstappen are tied on 188 points. Norris is listed fifth and Verstappen sixth in the official standings, leaving each 132 points behind Antonelli. Oscar Piastri follows in seventh on 128 points.

The championship order gives Antonelli a lead over his teammate and a margin of more than 100 points over every non-Mercedes driver. Singapore will be the first of the final seven events in which those gaps can change.

Malaysia extends the championship leader’s scoring run

Antonelli finished second to Verstappen in the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on October 4. He crossed the line 2.307 seconds behind the Red Bull driver, with Hamilton third, 4.919 seconds behind the winner.

Verstappen’s victory was his first Grand Prix win of the 2026 season. Antonelli’s second place added to a campaign that has already produced victories in China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco, Belgium, Italy and Spain.

Russell retired from the Malaysia race and is now expected to take a grid penalty in Singapore, according to reports published by Autosport, Motorsport.com and Sky Sports. Mercedes had not issued confirmation of the precise grid drop in the official information available on Tuesday.

That penalty could affect the starting order at Marina Bay, but it does not change the current championship classification: Antonelli leads Russell by 84 points heading into the weekend.

A compressed Marina Bay challenge awaits

The Singapore Grand Prix is scheduled for October 9 to 11 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. It is Round 17 of the championship and will use the Sprint format, reducing practice time before the first competitive session.

Drivers will have one Free Practice session at 4:30 p.m. local time on Friday. Sprint Qualifying follows at 8:30 p.m., leaving teams only a few hours between the sole practice session and the start of competitive running.

The Sprint is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday, followed by Grand Prix Qualifying at 9 p.m. The Grand Prix will begin at 8 p.m. local time on Sunday, October 11.

For Antonelli, the weekend introduces another opportunity to add to his points total before Formula 1 begins the final six-event run. It also places the championship leader and his rivals into a format with fewer practice laps before the grid-setting sessions.

Seven rounds remain on the calendar

After Singapore, the championship moves to the United States Grand Prix from October 23 to 25. Mexico follows from October 30 to November 1, with São Paulo scheduled for November 6 to 8.

The final three rounds are Las Vegas from November 19 to 21, Qatar from November 27 to 29 and Abu Dhabi from December 4 to 6.

Russell remains the only driver within 100 points of Antonelli. Hamilton, Leclerc, Norris and Verstappen occupy the next four positions, while Piastri is seventh. The Sprint format in Singapore provides the first competitive running of the weekend on Friday night and an additional points-scoring session on Saturday.
