Lando Norris took McLaren’s first Grand Prix win of 2026 in Hungary, beating Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli after Oscar Piastri retired.
Norris converts pole into victory
Lando Norris converted pole position into victory for McLaren at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, taking his first win of the season after a dramatic 70-lap race at the Hungaroring.
The McLaren driver finished in 1:39:56.180, taking the chequered flag 15.080 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli completed the podium, 18.728 seconds behind Norris.
Norris did not lead throughout. Team-mate Oscar Piastri moved ahead during the opening stages, putting both McLarens at the heart of the fight before the order changed around the middle of the Grand Prix. Norris came through to regain the lead and made three pit stops on his way to victory, one more than Verstappen and Antonelli.
It was the first Grand Prix win of 2026 for Norris and McLaren. Mercedes and Ferrari had already taken victories this season, and McLaren has now joined them at the front.
Piastri retirement changes McLaren’s race
Piastri retired after 55 laps with a gearbox failure, removing one of Norris’s main rivals and costing McLaren the chance to turn its early pace into a two-car points finish.
The Australian passed pole-sitter Norris and led the opening portion of the race, then surrendered first place around the middle of the contest before stopping. Norris collected the maximum 25 points, but Piastri’s retirement left McLaren with one classified car in Budapest.
One side of the garage celebrated a breakthrough victory, while the other dealt with an expensive mechanical retirement. Norris still converted McLaren’s speed into a result, holding his advantage over the closing laps to win by more than 15 seconds.
Norris stayed in contention as the strategy shifted, making three stops and beating two-stop rivals Verstappen and Antonelli. The absence of detailed stint data means no single call can be identified as decisive, but McLaren’s pace and execution allowed Norris to capitalize once Piastri’s challenge ended.
Verstappen and Antonelli complete podium
Verstappen finished second for Red Bull Racing and scored 18 points. He crossed the line 3.648 seconds ahead of Antonelli, while Isack Hadjar added a strong supporting result for Red Bull in sixth.
Antonelli’s third place had major consequences for the drivers’ championship. Starting seventh, the Mercedes driver worked his way through the field and reached the podium with a long opening stint and strong late-race tyre performance. His 15 points increased his championship lead over Lewis Hamilton to 50 points.
Ferrari took fourth and fifth, although the positions changed after the chequered flag. Hamilton finished fourth on the road, then received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane that dropped him behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. The official classification put Leclerc fourth, 23.840 seconds behind Norris, with Hamilton fifth and only 0.700 seconds farther back once the penalty was applied.
Hadjar claimed sixth for Red Bull Racing, and George Russell brought the second Mercedes home seventh. Russell scored six points but lost more ground in the championship as Antonelli tightened his hold on first place.
Points spread through the midfield
Liam Lawson headed the lapped runners in eighth for Racing Bulls, earning four points. Nico Hulkenberg took ninth for Audi, and Arvid Lindblad collected the final point in tenth for Racing Bulls.
Gabriel Bortoleto finished outside the points in 11th, followed by Pierre Gasly, Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso. Franco Colapinto placed 15th, ahead of Esteban Ocon, Alexander Albon, Carlos Sainz and Oliver Bearman.
Bearman was handed a five-second penalty for ignoring blue flags but retained 19th in the official classification. Piastri was joined on the retirement list by both Cadillac drivers, with Sergio Perez stopping after 48 laps and Valtteri Bottas after 13.
The first seven finishers covered all 70 laps, Lawson through Alonso ended one lap down, and Colapinto through Bearman were classified two laps behind Norris.
Championship picture and what comes next
Antonelli gained heavily from his recovery to third in Budapest. His lead over Hamilton in the drivers’ standings is now 50 points, while Mercedes continues to hold a comfortable advantage in the constructors’ championship.
Norris’s win carried a different significance. McLaren has proved it can win in 2026, and a margin of more than 15 seconds showed its result did not rely on a tight run to the flag. Piastri’s gearbox failure is still a concern because it stopped the team from maximizing a Grand Prix in which both cars spent time in the lead.
Formula 1 heads to the Dutch Grand Prix next. Norris and McLaren will arrive with fresh momentum, Verstappen with another substantial points haul, and Antonelli holding an even firmer championship lead.
